During my career, I have seen many learners underestimated and their caregivers dismissed simply because their support professionals didn't know how to support their complex needs. I am a firm believer that every individual should be given the chance to succeed. To me, an individual who has struggled in the past isn't a reason to expect slow progress. It's an opportunity to dive in headfirst. Working through intricate challenges to find meaningful solutions is both what I love and what learners deserve.

Areas of Specialty

All BCBAs have specific areas of experience and expertise-

Here are mine.

Treatment of Severe Problem Behavior

Problem behavior is a frequent challenge for people with atypical development, and sometimes an issue for typically developing people as well. Although many BCBAs and special education teachers are used to dealing with problem behavior, I'm here to treat it, not just deal with it. By thoroughly identifying controlling variables of problem behavior and pinpointing the replacement skills that will need to be taught, I can help families move past simply managing day to day.

What exactly is a problem behavior? It all depends on the context, but they can include physical aggression, elopement (running off), wandering, property destruction, tantrums, and repetitive or restrictive behaviors that prevent the individual from engaging in activities needed for learning and self-care.

Sleep

Although sleep is a natural process, many behavioral habits can develop that interfere with healthy sleep at any age. Supplements and medications, although sometimes necessary, typically lose effectiveness or become habit forming. This is especially concerning when you consider that many prescription sleep aids alter the brain's sleep architecture, resulting in a night's sleep that isn't restful. For those who struggle to learn new behaviors, develop habits, and self-regulate their attention and energy, sleep is frequently an ongoing problem. Whether it's an inability to fall asleep, stay as sleep, or get up in the morning, targeted ABA interventions can teach the needed skills for healthy sleep, without resorting to traditional sleep training methods such as letting them "cry it out," walking them back to bed all night long, or other forms of extinction.

Establishing Early Learning Skills

Early learning skills are essential for the development of skills we all need for the rest of our lives. Without mastering these skills, a person's rate of learning is slow and often regresses whenever there is a change such as getting a new teacher or having a break in services.

What are early learning skills? Paying attention to an instructor, being able to follow simple instructions, transitioning safely from one location to another, handing favorite items over to someone else for brief periods or stopping a favorite activity, waiting, responding successfully to a variety of different prompts, and early communication. And most important is the ability to do these things with different people, in different environments, without being asked or prompted several times.

Establishing Early Communication Skills

Does your loved one struggle to communicate their wants and needs? Maybe they have been given different communication systems (e.g., iPad, picture cards, etc.) but never seem to use them outside of school or therapy. Whether or not someone learns to speak, everyone needs to learn the basics of early communication to get their wants and needs met. Without these skills, problem behaviors are very likely to develop, and the individual is bound to experience a diminished quality of life, as they are reliant on others to 'read their mind' to figure out what they need. When these early communication skills don't develop naturally, most individuals need systematic behavioral instruction to establish them.
